JVGS now stands for Jeff's Volleyball Got Served. That's right, this is now a volleyball site! Some people didn't think I had the volleyballs to do it, but here it is on the net! Here's a set of volleyball game reviews for you...I'll let you dig right in!

This is an all-female volleyball game from Sega. You can choose one of 16 bikini-clad teams and hit the beach. Although there is an arcade mode, the main focus is the world tour mode. You compete in tournaments along with your partner, who gradually improves her skills as you advance. An edit mode lets you design your characters; you can choose from a selection of faces, hairstyles, uniforms, and sunglasses. Even though the gameplay is simple (only two buttons and the control stick are required), Beach Spikers is a very fun game to play. The world tour mode can also be addicting, as you want to keep playing to improve your ranking.

This two-on-two beach volleyball game comes from Hand Made Software, makers of Jimmy Connors' Tennis. The game uses a red marker to indicate where the volleyball will land. You'll need to be right on that spot, because the hit detection can be a bit too precise. It gives the game more of a simulation feel as opposed to an arcade style game. Because the screen scrolls left and right to follow the ball, there are times when you can't see your player. In addition, your teammate will sometimes block your view of the ball marker. Such faults detract from the gameplay. On the plus side, a nice "CD player" feature lets you choose and customize which of the game's ten tunes you'll hear. But it's not enough; Malibu Bikini Volleyball is a subpar sports game.

Up to four players can compete in this 2-on-2 beach volleyball game from Acclaim. Choose male or female players as you partake in exhibition games, the arcade mode, and the lengthy U.S. Tour. While the gameplay doesn't stand out from other volleyball games, it is solid and fun to play. Unfortunately, the loading times are a bit long, namely the 30 second load before each match. There are many unlockable items, most of which aren't very exciting (like sunglasses or a new outfit for your character). But there are also music videos, previews of other Acclaim games, and mini games that can be unlocked. It may take a lot of work though; you'll need to win hundreds of matches against the computer to unlock everything.

This is one of the best volleyball games around. It features fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay for up to four players. The special moves (such as the Super Spike) add to the excitement, even though they do require some button-mashing to pull off. The control is good overall, and the graphics and sound are above average as well. Unfortunately, playing this game makes my left thumb hurt after a while. The standard control pad may not be the best for games such as this that require almost constant movement. But sore thumbs or not, Super Spike V'Ball is a blast to play. It's also humorous to see the female referee seemingly choke herself after each match.
