My Nintendo Direct Thoughts (June 2026)

Yesterday, Nintendo posted their big Nintendo Direct for summer. Here I’m going to share my thoughts on some of the games shown, but not all of them. Probably not even half of them. But I will discuss the ones that interested me in one way or another.

Rhythm Heaven Groove

A frog themed game in Rhythm Heaven Groove.

This was the first game shown (though we already knew about it), and it comes out next month. I was a big fan of Rhythm Heaven Fever on Wii (wubba dubba dub, is that true?), and I’m looking forward to this one as well. It looks cool, but this is the type of game that you have to play to really appreciate it. I am planning on getting this game, but probably not as soon as it launches.

While the characters in this one look almost laughable, this unique game quickly appealed to me. Maybe it’s just a combination of the odd characters, pretty backgrounds, and the whole idea of exploring this world. Unfortunately, it sounds like it’s strictly a multiplayer game.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort

I love the Wii Sports/Switch Sports games, but the line-up of sports for this one doesn’t excite me. There are only 12 sports, and five of them are already in Nintendo Switch Sports. A few others are returning from Wii Sports Resort too, but the new sports don’t look all that fun to me. Thumb wrestling? Really?

It seems like this should’ve been DLC for Nintendo Switch Sports instead of a separate game. And since they’re bringing back so many old sports, why not baseball or Frisbee dog? Sure, it’s always possible they can add new sports later… but as it stands now, this doesn’t interest me at all.

Star Fox

A bit of the Star Fox 64 remake was shown, but the most surprising news is that a demo is now available! I tried it out tonight, and it’s pretty much what I expected: It’s fun, and much prettier. 😆

But I already have the original Star Fox 64, as well as one “reimagining” of SF64 in Star Fox Zero. This demo didn’t convince me that I need to buy the game for a third time. 😛 Oh, and I absolutely hate Slippy’s new voice. 😆

Final Fantasy Resonance

Believe it or not, I’m a big fan of the older Final Fantasy games on SNES and PlayStation (1 and 2). But for whatever reason, it’s been harder for me to get into newer RPGs lately. I actually bought Final Fantasy XII on Switch, but I haven’t played it beyond an hour or so. (Maybe at some point!)

But this one with the “HD-2D” graphics has a nostalgic appeal that reminds me of the old SNES games. It looks really good, and it’s probably one of my top-three favorites from this Direct! I’m going to keep an eye out for reviews on this one.

Splatoon Raiders

Even though I was a big fan of Splatoon and Splatoon 2, my interest in the series has fallen off a cliff. But especially hearing this is a single-player game? My interest in this is exactly zero.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

I’m thrilled to see that the rumors of an Ocarina of Time remake are true! Ocarina of Time is such an amazing game, and it’s never even been in HD before. I just wish they had shown some gameplay footage! But I’m sure they’ll save that for another time, hopefully not too far into the future. This is my most-wanted game from this Direct, and a must-buy for me.

Yes, Switch 2 still needs its own, new Zelda game. But this will help hold us over for a while.

No-Shows

Unfortunately, nothing related to Animal Crossing or Tomodachi Life was revealed in the Direct. I’m still hoping Living the Dream gets an update with the Concert Hall (or something similar) at some point. And I know we’re not getting a new Animal Crossing game in 2026, but I’m always holding out hope for a New Leaf port or at least the GameCube game coming to Nintendo Switch Online.

What did you enjoy most from the Direct? What were you hoping to see, but didn’t? Leave a comment below!
