BOTW #24 – Working on Side Quests

When I resumed my game of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I got to work on some remaining side quests. I began by following the Zora River to look for Fronk’s missing wife, but I got distracted when I ran into Finley.

Finley had a side quest of her own for me. She wrote a love letter, which she put in a canister and pushed into the river. My job was to follow the canister to see who ends up with the love letter. Unfortunately, the canister would often get stuck on obstacles. And if you lost sight of it, you had to start all over. It took me several tries (and much more time than I hoped), but I eventually completed the task and helped the couple get together.

Finley: Thank you so much for introducing me to my soul mate!

I then resumed my search for Fronk’s wife, and I found her on an island in Lake Hylia.

On Cape Cresia, I spotted a rainbow and stopped to admire it for a little while. For some reason, my GIF isn’t posting right now, but you can see it here.

I headed over to Palmorae Ruins, where I finally found the last monument shard I needed to complete a shrine quest. I’ve looked around for that piece many times before, and could never find it. But now, I found it without much trouble at all. Go figure.

Kneeling at the altar.

After a stop at the Great Fairy Fountain to enhance some clothing items, I went to Kakariko Village to play with Cottla. For some reason, I thought I had to play hide-and-seek with her. And I never found her before. But this time, there was an option to play tag instead. I caught her quickly to complete the side quest. My reward left me feeling salty, but it was good to clear a quest from my list.

Link receives rock salt as a reward for completing a side quest.

In Tarrey Town, I learned the recipe for monster cake. That was great news, because I needed that cake for another side quest. I made the cake, gave it to a relative of the person who needed it, and received a gold rupee (300 rupees) as my reward.

Then I went up to Goron City and started exploring from there. I soon found the Goron Hot Springs, where not everyone agreed about the spring being hot.

Grapp: (It's) lukewarm.

Another character there sent me on a new side quest. It was pretty easy to complete, although my reward wasn’t much more than a stick. πŸ˜›

In the Lost Woods, I used some Korok seeds to expand my weapon stash. I can now hold 20 weapons, and that is the maximum. Any future upgrades will have to go towards my bow or shield stashes.

Next, I decided to complete the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 side quest. I had to go to three locations and watch for a shooting star. Each shooting star was actually a glowing treasure chest that falls from the sky.

A glowing red treasure chest in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

I found Salvager headwear in the first one, and a Salvager vest in the second one. The third shooting star didn’t appear where I thought it would. The clue led me to the wrong place, but I eventually figured out the right place to go. The final one contained Salvager trousers. Here’s a look at the full outfit:

As I paraglided down from the mountain, my Sheikah sensor picked up a nearby shrine! It’s been a while since I’ve found a new shrine this way! I had to roll a giant snowball to gain entrance to it, and then I completed my 113th shrine. That seemed like a good stopping point, so here’s an updated look at my overall stats:

  • Completion percentage: 43.42%
  • Shrines: 113/120
  • Korok seeds: 253/900
  • Shrine quests: 37/42
  • Side quests: 67/77
  • Hyrule Compendium: 352/385

My progress has been slow, but I’m still having fun with the game. It’s just getting harder and harder to find new things. I think I will eventually buy the DLC for the game, but not just yet. I want to at least complete all of the shrines first.

I’ll see you next time. I’m hoping to post my next “Messing Around” video sometime in September.

BOTW #23 – All Memories

In Gerudo Town of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I had a chat with an archeologist named Rotana. She told me about a temple to the east, and a new shrine quest popped up on screen. But as soon as it appeared, more text appeared saying that the shrine quest was complete. This was a shrine I already opened up in entry #18. It makes me wonder how many of these others I’ve already solved, but just haven’t spoken to the right person yet.

Up on Gerudo Summit, I saw the dragon Farosh and shot at it. I recovered Farosh’s scale for hitting the beast with an arrow. I needed one of those to offer to the Spring of Courage, so I headed there right away.

The Spring of Courage in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Giving the offering opened up a shrine, and I also redeemed four spirit orbs for a stamina wheel while I was there.

There’s been one side quest (Recital at Warbler’s Nest) that I’ve wanted to complete for a long time, but I couldn’t because I didn’t know the recipe for salmon meuniΓ¨re. They probably told me the recipe at one point, but I could never find it again. It’s not in the recipe book at the Slippery Falcon, and nobody involved would give me the details.

But I was tired of waiting, so I just tried a couple of things until I made the right dish. I took it to the hungry bird, and the recital went on as planned. A new shrine popped up out of the ground as a result. I’m glad to finally get that one done with.

Kotts: Last one to mom is an unhatched egg!

The next time I visited a goddess statue, I traded in four spirit orbs for a stamina vessel. This completed my third ring of stamina, which is the maximum. This will make it easier to climb just about any obstacle I come across. All of my remaining spirit orbs will have to go towards heart containers.

Near Gerudo Canyon, I caught a horse and took it to Zyle to complete a side quest. While I was in the area, I also rescued Sesami’s four friends for another side quest.

I soon stumbled onto the “Test of Will,” which had me beating the heat and outlasting three Goron Blood Brothers. That opened up another shrine.

Bayge: PUMP IT UP, BROTHER!

On the shores on Lake Kolomo, I found a spot that looked like one of Princess Zelda’s photos. And sure enough, I found a glowing spot and recovered a memory there. Finally finding that memory gave me new motivation to find the remaining memories as well.

After searching a bit, I found another memory near the royal ancient lab ruins. That left only one photo, and it appeared to be near Hyrule Castle. So I headed to the Central Square area and started searching the walls. However, I found no memory. So I figured it must be inside the Hyrule Castle gate…in other words, the final area, where the map switches to the divine beast style map instead of the standard outdoor map. By the way, it’s very annoying that we can’t use the standard map here.

Of course, the area has lots of guardians. But I generally just ran past them as I explored. I found a number of new areas where I hadn’t been before, including some secret passageways and some mine carts.

Riding a mine cart under Hyrule Castle.

I even found a Hylian shield in the lockup, and later I found Princess Zelda’s room…and I read her diary! πŸ˜› After that, I found it…the glowing spot where I recalled the memory I needed.

I returned to Kakariko Village and told Impa that I’ve recalled all twelve memories. She basically said “not so fast.” There is one more to recover, and she showed me a picture of what to look for. She said I could get there in half a day’s time. So after thinking about it for a minute, I had a pretty good idea where it was.

I headed there right away, and caught a wild horse to help speed up my search. It didn’t take me long, though. I recovered the final memory. Without spoiling it too much, I’ll just say that it showed the events that led to Link being put in the Shrine of Resurrection in the first place. Well, now I know how I got there. πŸ˜› And that completed the “Captured Memories” main quest.

While exploring a suspicious-looking spot on the map, I found the eighth heroine statue. So I took a picture I needed for a side quest.

I returned to Gerudo Town to show the picture to someone, and then I completed another side quest there as well. I gained entrance into the Gerudo Secret Club, where I bought a new outfit.

Link looks like a skeleton in the radiant outfit.
Do these clothes make me look skinny?

In another side quest, I captured and tamed the royal family’s white horse. Toffa rewarded me with the royal family’s saddle and bridle that Zelda once used herself. On her horse, I mean. Oh, and I got to keep the horse too. Pretty good deal.

Toffa: What? You brought the royal family's white horse? Well I'll be... Grandpa wasn't lying!

I’ve made some good progress on quests this time. Here’s my current status:

Completion percentage: 42.01%
Shrines: 111/120
Korok seeds: 239/900
Shrine quests: 36/42
Side quests: 61/77
Hyrule Compendium: 352/385

See you next time!

BOTW #22 – 100th Shrine

When I resumed my game of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I decided to take a break from mindless exploring. Instead, I made an effort to complete some of the many shrine quests I had on my list.

So I found the one in the shadow of Gerudo Tower, the one near Jeddo Bridge where you have to shoot an arrow through two rings, the one where you have to ride a buck onto the altar on Rabia Plain, and the one in Horon Lagoon where you have to break rocks and sail on gusts of wind onto the altar. I also found a shrine based on some markings on a mountain up in the Gerudo Highlands.

I later took the path up to Goron City, and I found a shrine along the way. It was my 100th shrine completed. Only 20 more to go!

My 100th shrine in Breath of the Wild.

I met up with Picasso Pikango the artist in Goron City, and he gave me a hint as to where to find one of my remaining memories. I started climbing Death Mountain and began searching. It took me a while to find the right spot, but eventually, I found the spot and recovered the memory. I still have three more memories to go, though.

After that, I took a break from shrine-and-memory-hunting for a little “maintenance.” I added another weapon slot at Korok Forest, I bought an ancient bow at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab (mainly for the Compendium), I enhanced a ton of clothing items at the Great Fairy Fountain, and I redeemed 12 spirit orbs for two heart containers and a stamina vessel.

After defeating some enemies near Aris Beach for a side quest, I then stopped to admire another beautiful sunrise.

The sunrise from Aris Beach.

I then went back to work on completing more shrine quests. I found the one where the sun shines through the heart of the Rito pillar to show the way. Then I went up to the Hebra Mountains to look around by the lone cedar tree. I’ve been there before, but never saw the huge bird I was supposed to see. But this time…I saw it. What a clever clue that was. πŸ˜‰ It was quite satisfying to figure that one out.

After completing the shrine there, I decided to return to the Mirro Shaz shrine that I mentioned last month. I had a few sledgehammers (and similar weapons) on hand, so I gave that bonus puzzle another try. After several tries, I got it…but perhaps not the way it was intended. It ended up looking like a trick shot. I bounced the ball off of the blocks, then off a pillar, and it rolled into the altar.

The path of the ball.

My reward was a giant ancient core.

In the Faron Grasslands, I was able to track down a Moblin club. I needed it for Nebb, the weapon connoisseur. I took it to Hateno Village and beat him with it showed it to him.Β  He gave me 50 rupees for letting him see it.

Link beats the kid with a club?
You should have given me more rupees, you little brat.

I later showed him a duplex bow, a windcleaver, an ancient battle axe+, a frostspear, and an ancient short sword. (That last one had to be made at the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab). Nebb gave me some money for each one, and a diamond for the last one. Finally, that side quest was complete.

Next, I went to Gerudo Town. I learned that Barta was missing. She’s the one who was held prisoner in the Yiga Clan hideout before, and she was missing again. I was told she was in the desert to the southwest, so I headed that way.

But before I found Barta, I found something else much bigger: The Great Fairy Tera! I had to pay 10,000 rupees to get her to…bloom. I’ve now unlocked all four of the great fairies. It’s about time! πŸ˜›

After she upgraded some of my clothing, I completed a nearby shrine. I then found Barta, and gave her a hearty durian. It rejuvenated her, and she headed back to town. I completed the side quest, and that also allowed me to get the thunder helm from Riju.

Since I was in the area, I also completed the sand seal racing quest, which opened up another shrine.

After that, I took a break from shrine quests (or so I thought) to just explore. But as I explored near Taran Pass, I just happened to find three altars…belonging to three giants who each wore an orb around their neck. This was part of the “Three Giant Brothers” shrine quest. I gave them all a wake-up call.

In nearby Lurelin Village, I went out to sea to find some sunken buried gems. It was an experience I’ll always treasure. Okay, not really. But it completed a side quest, and that works for me.

I wrapped up my session, and here are my latest stats:

Completion percentage: 37.79%
Photo memories: 9/12
Shrines: 106/120
Korok seeds: 203/900
Shrine quests: 33/42
Side quests: 55/77
Hyrule Compendium: 344/385

Even though I still have nine more shrine quests to complete, there are only two on my list. I guess there are some people I still need to talk to. Somewhere.

If you haven’t seen my latest Breath of the Wild video, Messing Around #3, here it is!

See you next time!
