Stardew Valley – Junimos & Egg Festival

Day 10

As I came out of my house today, Clint was right outside my door. He said that he’s been noticing I’ve been breaking rocks open and finding ore. Wait, has he been following me into the mines? Anyway, he gave me the blueprints to a furnace. It would allow me to smelt metal bars, which I can then use for crafting, construction, and upgrading my tools.

After the screen faded to black, Clint turned into Marnie. Marnie came over to bring me…a dog! She said it was a stray that was sitting by the entrance to my farm. She asked if I wanted to adopt it. Well, duh! I had to name the dog, and the default name was Yogi. But it’s a dog, not a bear. I chose the name Rufus. And just like that, I have a dog!

Marnie: Well, Rufus... You be a good pooch now... okay? After that, I was walking towards town when I triggered yet another cut scene. Mayor Lewis showed me the Pelican Town community center. It’s all run down and in poor shape. He said Joja Corporation wants to buy the land and turn it into a warehouse, but he doesn’t have the heart to sell it. Although he said he may change his mind if anyone else buys a Joja Co. membership, that won’t be me. Down with Joja!

Lewis: This is the Pelican Town Community Center... or what's left of it, anyway. He unlocked the door and took me inside and murdered me. He was telling me about the place, and I kept seeing things when Lewis’ back was turned. It looked like a slime from the mine at first, but maybe it was just a ghostly green apple with arms and legs. At any rate, this place is haunted!

I see a ghost in the community center.Lewis was starting to think I was going crazy, although he tried to act like it was just a rat that I saw. He left, but he said he would leave the door unlocked from now on, so that maybe I can catch the “rat.”

I continued exploring the community center, and in one room, I found a strange scroll with some weird writing on it. I didn’t know what to make of it, so I continued on with my day. Next, I worked in the mine, and then went to the saloon to chat a bit.

On the way out, I saw Linus (the old guy who lives in a tent) going through George’s garbage can for food.

Linus digs through a garbage can for food in Stardew Valley.George heard the noise and came outside, thinking it was raccoons making the noise. He saw me and asked me to scare off the raccoons for him. I went over and had a chat with Linus. He asked if I thought anything was wrong with him taking the food scraps, and I said no. He then agreed to stop rummaging through George’s can.

But as he walked off, he then started going through the saloon’s garbage can! Gus came out, and told Linus that if he needed food, to just ask. He then gave Linus some zucchini fritters. Once the cutscene was over, I went home for the night.

Day 11

When I came out of my house, there were tons of things floating in the air. They looked like feathers, so I wondered if my new dog just killed a chicken or something! But then I realized they were probably supposed to be cherry blossom petals.

Cherry blossom petals fall from the sky in springtime in Stardew Valley.I had a letter in the mail, from a wizard! He said he may have some information about my “rat problem,” and he told me to visit him up in his tower. I also had a letter from Robin, offering a 250g reward if I find her missing axe.

But first, I headed over to the blacksmith. I gave him a geode I had in my pockets, and he cracked it open for me. There was a green “jamborite” inside. Is that a meteorite that came from Jambette? Anyway, I donated it to the museum next door.

As I headed toward the wizard’s tower, I found Jas and Vincent playing by the sewer. They wanted to explore inside there, but it was locked. The kids got spooked and ran away when they heard something squishing inside.

The kids (Jas and Vincent) get scared when they hearing something inside the sewer.
Maybe it’s just the Teenage Mutant Nin-Jas Turtles.

After that, I continued on to the tower, where I met the wizard. He had a surprise for me… he had one of those apple-ghosts!

The wizard and his junimo ghost in Stardew Valley. He said they call themselves the Junimos. They’re mysterious spirits that refuse to talk to him. Wait, then how did he know they call themselves Junimos? 😛

I apparently told him about the scroll I found in the community center. Odd that he knew about me snooping inside there, yet he didn’t know about the scroll. So he teleported to check out the scroll and then returned. Conveniently, he was able to translate the scroll. Apparently the Junimos are able to help us out, if we give them gifts of the valley. He then drugged me and I started hallucinating.

Seeing trees and leaves as I hallucinate in Stardew Valley. That forest juice he made me drink allowed me to now decipher the scrolls for myself. So I returned to the community center, and I could now see what I had to do. There are different “bundles” listed, and a reward.

Summer foraging bundle. Reward: Bridge repair.Apparently, if I donate all the required items, the little apple ghosts will repair a bridge. While I donated a few items, I have a long way to go before I can complete the bundles. Well, that’s something to work on for the future.

After unsuccessfully looking for Robin’s axe, I returned home for the night.

Day 12

It was raining today. I got a letter from Mayor Lewis, telling me that the egg festival would be held tomorrow. I worked on cleaning up my farm a bit, and I found an unusual shop. It was a carriage that was apparently pulled by a purple pig? They had some veggies and seeds for sale, as well as bug meat. Sounds delicious, but I passed this time. 😛

Unusual food truck?I really didn’t get much done today. I planted a few seeds and then went to bed.

Day 13

As the day began, I finally had the 2,000g I needed to expand my backpack! Unfortunately, because of the egg festival, shops weren’t open. But that’s okay, because I got to see what the egg festival was all about! I couldn’t go into town until 9 a.m. though, so I had to scramble to kill some time. But when the time came, I joined in the fun. It’s a shell of a party!

The egg festival in Stardew Valley. After I spoke with everyone, the egg hunt began. I had 52 seconds to find as many eggs as I could.

Lewis: Let the egg hunt begin!I only collected six eggs in that span, and it wasn’t enough. Abigail was the winner of the egg hunt. Lewis gave her the prize, but it wasn’t revealed what that prize was. I’ll have to try to win it next year. The festival then ended, and I went to sleep for the night. See you next time!

Stardew Valley – Guild Trip

Day 6

My parsnips were ready to harvest today, so I picked them up and put them in the shipping box. That completed the objective (or quest, as they’re apparently called) in my journal, and I got 100g (money) as a bonus. Also, I finally know how to use the ZL and ZR buttons to switch between items. Previously, I had been trying to use L and R, and those don’t work. 😛

Harvesting parsnips in Stardew Valley. Two new quests opened up: “Raising Animals,” which asks me to build a chicken coop, and “Advancement,” which requires that I craft a scarecrow.

I noticed I had two geodes in my pockets, so I headed over to the blacksmith’s shop. For 25g each, he’ll crack them open to reveal what’s inside. My two geodes contained a thunder egg and a mudstone.

The blacksmith smashes open a geode in Stardew Valley.Their description told me that Gunther could tell me more about them at the museum. So I headed there next, and donated both items to the museum. Now it’s not empty any more! I earned 250g for completing the Archaeology quest from my journal. Nice!

Back outside, I saw someone standing on the bridge. When I spoke to the person, I saw that it was Elliott.

Elliott: Ah, the new farmer we've all been expecting... and whose arrival has sparked many a conversation! He was that last person I needed to introduce myself to, so that completed the “Introductions” quest. In its place was a new one, “How to Win Friends.” I just had to give someone a gift. Easy enough. I didn’t have any Reese’s Pieces, so I gave Elliott a lump of coal from my pockets. He didn’t like it, but it completed the quest for me…earning me 100g in the process.

Day 7

Now that I had over 1,000g, I was thinking I had enough to buy the backpack upgrade. But once I got to Pierre’s, I saw that it actually costs 2,000g, not 1,000. Oops. While I was there, I bought a couple of potato seeds.

I went over to the mine, and I came across some enemies! I got my sword out and got my first taste of combat. It tasted like lime! Okay, not really, but these green slimes look like they could be made out of lime Jello.

Fighting green slimes in the mine of Stardew Valley.Once I got down to the 5th level down, I found an elevator. I can use it to quickly travel to any elevator door that I’ve discovered. A new quest appeared, telling me to reach level 40. But since it was getting late, and since I still can’t keep many of the things I encounter (due to lack of backpack space), I returned to the surface.

Day 8

I received two letters in the mail today. One was from Robin, telling me she can build me a well if I have 75 stones and 1000g. Well, I’m not interested in doing that anytime soon. The other letter was from Marlon, telling me that if I slay ten slimes, I’ll be able to enter his adventurer’s guild.

So I returned to the mine, and kept fighting until I defeated ten slimes. After that, I relaxed at the saloon and took the scenic route home. I worked on cleaning up my farm a bit, and then went to sleep.

Day 9

It was time for a guild trip. Surprisingly, the guild didn’t open until 2 p.m. though, so I killed some slime time in the mine. I then headed next door and entered the adventurer’s guild at last. I have to admit, I was a bit underwhelmed.

Inside the adventurer's guild in Stardew Valley. It’s basically just a shop. Marlon had four items for sale: A wooden blade (a better sword), sneakers (which improve my defense), and two rings that affect different combat attributes.

There was also a list of goals on the wall (showing I’ve killed 17/1000 slimes, for example). When I meet those goals, I’m supposed to talk to Gil (the sleeping man in the rocking chair) for rewards. Sounds guild. I mean, sounds good. It doesn’t help me much for right now though, but I’ll be back someday.

With nothing else going on, I just explored a bit. I ran into Pam on a bridge, and she angrily warned me not to snoop around the trailer. Wow, she seems like a nut.

Pam: Hey, you! Don't be snoopin' around the trailer when I'm out! Got it?
Psycho much?

I then headed to the blacksmith’s shop so he could crack open another geode I found, but I got there too late. The shop was already closed for the evening. So I went in the saloon for a bit, and had a chat with Abigail. She told me she wasn’t in a good mood, so I thought I’d try to cheer her up. I gave her the geode. Unfortunately, she didn’t seem to care for it…or know what to do with it.

Abigail: What am I supposed to do with this?Oh well. I soon returned home for the night.

Stardew Valley – Into the Mine

Day 3

It was raining as I woke up today. I cleared some space just outside my house, and planted some more seeds. As I was working on my farm, I heard a weird noise, a few times. It sounded like a ghost! I suppose it could have been the wind, but it sounded more like a ghostly manifestation than breezy precipitation.

Aside from the ghostly noise though, I was also noticing some static as music or sound effects would play. It started to get quite annoying. Apparently it’s a glitch, and you just have to restart the game to get rid of it. I did that after the day was over, but in the meantime, I just put up with it as best I could.

Anyway, I noticed my energy was getting low, so I went over to the saloon. I bought some bread, and ate it…once I figured out how. So I threw it up into the air, waited for it to fall, jumped up, and gobbled it down before it hit the ground. 😉

Eating bread (animated GIF) in Stardew Valley for Nintendo Switch.
Some people do this with popcorn. I use an entire loaf of bread.

Since it was already getting dark, I went home and went to bread bed.

Day 4

The rain was gone today, so I watered my crops in the morning. I then set off to explore a bit. I returned to the tent I visited before, but this time somebody was outside with a campfire. It was an old guy named Linus. Doesn’t he get cold living out here? Good grief. Maybe he can carry a blanket with him at all times.

The mines were nearby, but some rocks apparently fell and blocked the path. I tried to free the worker on the other side, but it was no use. Oh well. It’s his problem, not mine.

Rocks blocking the path to the mines in Stardew Valley.Over at Pierre’s shop, I really wanted the backpack upgrade. But I don’t have nearly enough money for it. But Pierre’s also had some seeds for sale. I was hoping for some ice cream seeds, but no such luck. 😉 But I had my eye on potato seeds, so I bought one. Actually I didn’t realize I was only buying one seed until I got home and planted it.

After working on my farm a bit, I went on to bed.

Day 5

It was sunny again today, and I saw that my first batch of crops was getting bigger. I got a letter in the mail from JojaMart. Apparently the landslide by the mines was their fault! It was a result of their nearby drilling! So basically, I had Joja on my mine. 😛

The good news is that they have cleaned up the mess, so I was able to check out the mines today. Inside, there was a man named Marlon. He wears an eye patch, and he gave me a rusty sword for some reason. But aside from the strange guy with the sword, this seems much like the mines you find in some Harvest Moon games.

Mining in Stardew Valley. You can smash rocks and dig in the dirt to find ore and other goodies. But since my inventory was full and I couldn’t keep everything I dug up, I didn’t stick around for long. I made my way back to town, and I saw the mayor Lewis peeing standing near the fountain.

Lewis: I hope things are going well on Ravine farm. I'd hate to see it all dried up.
Yet you didn’t mind it being a disaster zone for the past XX years?

Haley was nearby, and I tried to talk to her. But the game flat out told me that she was ignoring me.

Haley is ignoring you. When night fell, I headed over to the saloon. It was the busiest that I’ve seen it, with over a dozen people inside. I took a look at the jukebox; you can choose the song that plays. I also spoke with everyone…well, at least everyone that would speak to me.

A busy night in the saloon in Stardew Valley. After that, I checked my journal and saw that I have now spoken with 27 of the 28 people I’m supposed to meet. I have no idea who I’m missing, but I’m sure I’ll run into him/her eventually.

Once I was done at the saloon, I returned home and planted a few more seeds I had leftover. I then went to bed for the night.

Level Up: Level 1 Mining. +1 Pickaxe Proficiency. New crafting recipe: Cherry Bomb.

Other Notes

As you may have guessed, I’ve decided to continue making blog entries for a while, at least. The videos will also continue. Here’s one showing some of the highlights from Days 3-5.

One last note that I forgot to mention last time: The time it takes to save your game at the end of each day is about 20-25 seconds. That seems excessively long. It’s something you’d expect on an original PlayStation game from 1996. 😛

This game does seem to have some technical flaws and glitches (like the static), but perhaps some of them will be fixed in an update. I’m still enjoying the game regardless. See you next time. 🙂
