Animal Crossing Puzzle League

Agent S recently asked me to dig up the time capsule that she had me bury last month. So I returned to the northwest corner of town, dug up the capsule, and returned it to the superhero squirrel. It contained a teacher’s desk, and she gave it to me as my reward.

Agent S: For helping me out, you should get what I stuffed in there! Please take this teacher's desk. While I’ve discussed many of the bigger features of the New Leaf update in the previous two blog entries, there are still many small changes as well. For example, you can sit in the RVs and honk the horn…scaring the camper in the process.

Nat gets scared when I honk the horn in his RV.And if you press the A button near the fire pit at the campground at night, you’ll do a little dance!

The fire pit dance at the drive-in campground.

If you have beans (not coffee beans, but the beans you throw), you can toss some (in the daytime) to feed the birds.

While visiting Arrested, I pretended to use the water pump to cook my beans in the fire.

Jeff, using the water pump: I can cook my beans.

Just in case you’re wondering, some of the special visitors I’ve seen at the campground the past few days include Nat, Zipper, Pavé, and Pascal.

Pascal: Hey, man. Do you, like, live in this town? It's a pretty far-out place. Hope it's cool for me to crash here.Yesterday, I used my magic lamp to summon Wisp. I then had Wisp scan my Isabelle Amiibo figure that came with Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival. That caused Isabelle’s RV to appear in the front spot at the drive-in campground. That’s Pascal’s RV in the back, if the scallops on the side didn’t give it away.

Isabelle's RV at the drive-in campground.

Isabelle was inside, of course. I decided to order the Isabelle scooter for three MEOW coupons.

Isabelle's RV at the drive-in campground, with the Isabelle scooter inside. But while looking at the list of items I could order, I noticed a Wii U console and a “New 3DS – Isabelle.” The New 3DS and Wii U items are how you play the new mini-games, Animal Crossing Puzzle League and Desert Island Escape! You can get those items from fortune cookies at the Nooklings’ shop (if you’re lucky), but it may be quicker just to check the special RV visitors each day and order them with MEOW coupons. I ordered them both.

But before I ended my game last night, I took a look in town hall. Wisp was standing in for Isabelle! Summoning a special character like this swaps them out with Wisp, so that the character can’t be seen in two places at the same time.

Today, the game consoles arrived! Since I’ve already played a lot of Desert Island Escape on Wii U, that wasn’t my priority for today. I will talk about it in more detail soon, but for now, I wanted to play some Animal Crossing Puzzle League! Just put the New 3DS in your house, walk up to it, and press the A button to start it. It works just like the NES games in the original Animal Crossing.

My New 3DS and Wii U console in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

This puzzle game is essentially the same game as Panel de Pon or Tetris Attack. On a wall of colored squares, you control a cursor that highlights two adjacent squares. By pressing the button, you can swap those two squares. The object is to line up three or more tiles of the same color, which will clear those tiles from the board. Combos and chain reactions are also possible.

Gameplay shot of Animal Crossing Puzzle League.

I started the story mode, which is the only mode available at the beginning. You battle against other Animal Crossing characters, although it’s not in a traditional head-to-head sense. It’s really just a series of one-player levels where you must meet a goal to win. Typically, you just have to clear a certain number of lines before your stack reaches the top of the screen.

Tortimer: Well, I do believe it's game time. Let's go!

Some of the competitors are special characters like Tortimer and Isabelle, and others are villagers of mine. Bob didn’t seem to understand what exactly we were playing.

Bob: I, Bob, promise to give all I have to this pie-eating contest. No matter what the cost!

I beat all of my competitors (including Cornimer at the end), and I completed the story mode. I unlocked four other modes in the process, but I have not played them yet.

You Won Puzzle League!

When I started up New Leaf later on, I had three letters from Nintendo in the mail! They congratulated me on my progress in Animal Crossing Puzzle League, and three gifts were enclosed: a fruit-panel floor, a fruit-panel wall, and fruit-panel cushion.

The fruit-panel wall, fruit-panel floor, and fruit-panel cushion.

The fruit-panel cushion can be customized at Re-Tail to display an orange, a pear, a banana, a grape, or a peach.

My recent dream visitors have been Nonnie from Area 11, David from Sparta, Erin from Reversi, Allen from Pallet, Scott from Maverik, and B from Titania. Thanks for stopping by!

And just a reminder that Friday Night Forest is this Friday at 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. This won’t be a theme night, so dress however you like.

Meeting Wisp

Last night, I returned to the campground and saw that the fire pit was now lit up. It doesn’t burn during the day.

The fire pit at the drive-in campground.Rolf told me that he was planning on moving out of town on November 13th. Wait, the 13th? Isn’t that unusual for an animal to ask about leaving ten days in advance? It seems like it’s usually 5-6 days max. Unless they changed this in the update?

Rolf: I've already picked a day too. I'll be leaving on the 13th of this very month!I circled my town four or five times last night, trying to find Wisp, but I didn’t have any luck. But then today, when I wasn’t even trying, a voice contacted me.

???: I'm sorry to bother you when you're in the middle of something, but would you please come over here? The voice came from a lamp. Well, inside a lamp.

???: Well, hello! As you can see, I'm a lamp. I mean, I'm INSIDE a lamp. Rather important distinction.Of course Wisp was the ghost inside the lamp, and he asked me to take the lamp back to my house. So I did, and out he popped.

Wisp: Ta-dahh!He told me that he can possess the body of another person if I have an Amiibo. I used an Amiibo card of Stitches, and he turned into Stitches. Well, only in appearance.

Wisp, appearing as Stitches: Please, don't be confused. I'm still Wisp on the inside, and that's what counts. He told me that he can grant me one wish per day. I had the option of asking Stitches to move into town or I could get some furniture. I opted for the furniture option, and he gave me a claw-foot tub. He also gave me some MEOW coupons before he went away. But the lamp remained in my house, so I think I can use it again without having to find Wisp every day.

I visited the campground tonight, and Blanca was the special visitor today. But to my surprise, she had a face! Her true face revealed at last??

Blanca: See, I have a bit of a problem with letting other people define me. I've really gotta work on that...Uhh… I think she actually looked better without a face. Apparently it’s not just me that thinks that way. Her description on the touch screen admitted she still looks kinda creepy.

Blanca. Sure, she likes to stir up trouble around the town. But when you see her out relaxing at the campground, she looks so... Well, she still looks pretty creepy. As expected, my secret storeroom is now complete. When in my house, I can press an icon on the touch screen to access it. Sweet!

The secret storeroom.I went up to Nook’s Homes, and Tom Nook introduced me to Lottie. She taught me how to redecorate my house by using the touch screen.

Lottie: President Nook did ask me to provide you with some simple redecorating tips. So here I am!
Please don’t call him that.

It works just like it did in Happy Home Designer, so I caught on quick.

Done and done. Now I'm basically a DIY genius!I immediately paid off the storeroom at the post office.

This is what the touch screen looks like when in my house now. The icon to the left of the light switch activates touch screen decorating controls, and the icon on the right lets you access your secret storage.

The touch screen options for HHD style redecorating mode (left) and secret storeroom (right).

I didn’t mention this the other day, but Kabuki has started appearing on Main Street recently. He moved out of town back in September 2015.

Kabuki, on Main Street: Confession time: I came by because I was missing Forest. Isn't that just like me?My recent dream visitors have been Ben from B-Town and Angovis from Unova.  Thanks for stopping by! My new dream visitor count now stands at 12. 😛 See you next time!

The Update is Here! Welcome Amiibo!

Nintendo posted their Animal Crossing Nintendo Direct video today, and it started off with a big surprise: The update is available now! It turns your regular copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf into Animal Crossing: New Leaf: Welcome Amiibo. There’s a lot of new stuff, so let’s get to it.

Drive-in Campground

The most noticeable addition is the new campground. The entrance isn’t on Main Street, it’s found as a new ramp in your town, going off to the side. In Forest, the entrance was near town hall.

The entrance to the new drive-in campground.Inside, you’ll find some camping related public works projects, one or two RVs, and you can see a waterfall in the distance.

The drive-in campground in AC New Leaf Welcome Amiibo. You’ll also find Harvey the hippie here: He’s the dog that runs the place.

Harvey at the drive-in campground: Well, this lovely little spot is a campground! We welcome all kinds here, from RVs to fifth wheels. He has some items for sale, but he doesn’t accept bells. Instead, you need Mutual Exchange Of Wealth (MEOW) coupons. More on those in a bit.

Harvey: In other words, your bells are no good here! We trade in Mutual Exchange Of Wealth Coupons. There was one RV parked at the campground today, and special characters can appear there. Today, I found Booker inside. It’s decorated like a small room, and you can order his items (but again, you pay in MEOW coupons).

Amiibo Compatibility & Wisp

If you scan an Animal Crossing Amiibo figure (or an Amiibo card of a special character), that character will appear in the back RV. The front RV will appear if you scan in a new Welcome Amiibo card.

But before you can scan an Amiibo, you have to acquire a magic lamp, which you can then rub to make Wisp appear. But at this point, I’m not sure how you get the magic lamp. Will it appear in town at night like in earlier games?

Anyway, once you scan one of the upcoming Welcome Amiibo cards, Wisp will allow you to summon that character to appear in an RV. Again, you’ll be able to enter his/her RV, order items, and even invite them to move into town. If you use regular Amiibo cards for villagers, they won’t have special RVs, but you can still invite them to move into town.

As for other Amiibo figures, some of them unlock new things as well. The Callie and Marie Amiibos will unlock Splatoon themed villagers Cece and Viché, while an inkling Amiibo will unlock Inkwell the octopus villager. There are also Zelda themed villagers, including Wolf Link, Medli, Ganon, and Epona.

CAT Machine

Next to town hall, there will be a new Coupon Allocating Terminal…or CAT machine. There will be town initiatives (achievements basically) that will let you earn MEOW coupons. My first task was to hang some items of clothing up on the wall of my house. Once I did that, I returned to the CAT machine and scored two MEOW coupons.

Welcome! This is your new CAT Machine!

By the way, if you don’t want to spend your MEOW coupons at the campground, you can exchange them for bells at the ABD. Each coupon is worth 3,000 bells, so it will be tempting to trade them in.

Mini-Games

Animal Crossing Amiibo figures may give you items that let you play mini-games like Animal Crossing Puzzle League and Desert Island Escape. The latter is from Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival on Wii U. Even though Amiibo Festival isn’t very good overall, Desert Island Escape was quite enjoyable. I’m sure it’ll be just as good on 3DS.

Amiibo Camera

The Amiibo Camera feature lets you scan Amiibo cards and add Animal Crossing characters to the real-life photos you take with the 3DS camera. I talked about it before here, but I haven’t tried it out for myself just yet. Look for more on this soon.

Secret Storeroom

Needs more storage? YES! The secret storeroom can be added onto your house at Nook’s Homes for a price of 158,000 bells. It appears to add 36 pages of storage (that’s enough for 360 extra items) that you can apparently access anywhere! Wow! This is one of my favorite additions in the update! I ordered mine, and it should be available tomorrow!

Tom Nook: If that sounds familiar to you, I recommend you consider one of our new secret storerooms, hm?

After adding the storeroom and completing a design seminar, you can move furniture around your house using the touch screen. It works just like in Happy Home Designer! Very helpful!

Linking Happy Home Designer

If you have Happy Home Designer, you can link New Leaf to your HHD data and order giant furniture from your Nooklings’ store.

Giant stew pot: 8,000 bells.

New Villagers

The new Welcome Amiibo cards include 50 new and returning villagers who weren’t previously in New Leaf. Here is the full list: Vivian, Hopkins, June, Piper, Paolo, Hornsby, Stella, Tybalt, Huck, Sylvana, Boris, Wade, Carrie, Ketchup, Rex, Stu, Ursala, Jacob, Maddie, Billy, Boyd, Bitty, Maggie, Murphy, Plucky, Sandy, Claude, Raddle, Julia, Louie, Bea, Admiral, Ellie, Boots, Weber, Candi, Leopold, Spike, Cashmere, Tad, Norma, Gonzo, Sprocket, Snooty, Olive, Dobie, Buzz, Cleo, Ike, and Tasha.

I was quite disappointed to see that neither Hank nor Emerald were among the returning villagers. But I do like Hornsby a lot, and Bea is cool too.

Dream Suite

One of the biggest changes in this addition is one that’s barely mentioned in the video. And that’s because it’s really bad news. You are forced to get a new dream address for your town. My new address is 5D00-000F-7611.

Luna: This town's dream has been given a Dream Address of 5D00-000F-7611.Your count of visitors who have dreamed of your town? GONE. But it gets worse. I tried to visit the old version of Forest, and I couldn’t. And it’s not just my town. All previous dream towns are GONE. Did you enjoy visiting a certain dream town? It’s gone. Sure, some people may update their dream towns again with a new address. But many great dream towns are now gone forever. Honestly, I’m a bit peeved about this. And Nintendo gave no warning that they would be doing this.

Other Changes

On Club Tortimer, you now have the ability to mute annoying players so you don’t see their text. And if you choose to restart your town, you don’t have to start from scratch. You can actually sell your town for a bunch of bells, which will be in your bank account when you start up again. Oh…and now you can sit on rocks.

Sitting on a rock.

My Thoughts

This update is really big, with a lot more changes and content than I imagined it would have. I’m sure lots of inactive New Leaf players should, and will, give New Leaf another chance. But with all of these additions, I wonder why they didn’t just save this all for the next Animal Crossing game (hopefully on Switch). They’re just raising the bar for themselves, so the next one will need that much more. Let’s just hope this New Leaf update isn’t keeping us from getting the next Animal Crossing game sometime soon.

If you’re starting up a new town, be sure to use the face guide to start your character off right. If you’re resuming your old town, use the hair guide to get rid of that bed-head!
