Wi-Fi Night

Today I StreetPassed someone who had some cool Super Mario 64 paintings in his house. I wanted to jump into them and start playing!

Super Mario 64 paintings in a New Leaf house I StreetPassed. And I began my cleanup after all the mess I made helping Franklin and the others prepare their food yesterday. I had to make several trips between my storage and Re-Tail to sell the extra fish and mushrooms. I decided to keep a stick of butter in my house as a souvenir, however.

A stick of butter I saved for my house.
Maybe I should eat it with a fork and knife.

Big Top asked me to visit his house, and we agreed to meet at 6:20. However, I had closed my 3DS and was doing other things. By the time I remembered, it was too late.

Big Top: Hey, did you forget about our plans? I waited for you at my house for ages.I think I’m starting to understand why Big Top hasn’t given me his picture. I seem to have bad luck with his requests sometimes. And of course there was the time I accidentally opened his time capsule…oops. They say an elephant never forgets, and that certainly seems to be the case with Big Top.

I found Gulliver down on the beach, and I woke him up. And then he asked if I was his princess?? Uh, no.

Gulliver: Oh... Are you my princess? Kiss me and wake me from my endless slumber! He asked me the question about the Nobel prize again, which I got incorrect a few weeks ago. I guessed Switzerland at the time, but this time I knew it was Sweden. Hey, at least I had the first two letters right! So I should be getting a gift from him in the mail tomorrow.

Gulliver: ...Sweden! That's right. That's right! I was going to go to Sweden! At 10:00 tonight, I opened my gate for Friday Night Forest. Skye was the first one to visit. After she got her hair done, we hung out in my house.

Skye looks into a crystal ball. After a bit, Maria also came over to visit. On my bench, I felt a bit threatened when she was sitting with her shovel up to my throat.

Maria sits with her shovel up to my throat. We tried to do some glitches, but we were failing miserably.

Trying to push Maria through a door. And failing. After a couple of disconnections, I reopened my gate. Skye came back, but Maria didn’t. But Peyton came over and joined in the fun. After I showed him my house, we went out to the island. Peyton and I did some bug-catching while Skye took a break to eat lunch. When she was done, we went on some tours. Skye picked the expert maze tour, and we came nowhere close to completing it.

Tortimer: You have 5 mintues to find some fruity treasure that's been hidden within it.So we tried the regular maze tour instead. Peyton found all of his fruit, but Skye and I again failed the challenge. So we went on a gardening tour instead. Even though it was the expert one, we actually completed it with plenty of time remaining. We won gold Tortimer awards and 12 medals.

Celebrating a successful gardening tour.Having finally done something successfully, we quit while we were ahead. We returned to Forest and I ended the party for the night. Have a great weekend, everyone! 🙂

Harvest Festival

Today was Thanksgiving in America, which means it’s the day of the harvest festival in Animal Crossing. But before I headed to the plaza to meet Franklin, I did my usual chores first. I watered flowers and found my money rock, which was actually a gem rock again today. But this time, I got five emeralds out of it!

Five emeralds from today's gem rock.I talked to Molly, and she told me how some of the villagers are indoors cooking for the harvest festival.

Molly: Some of our neighbors are inside preparing food for the Harvest Festival!Benedict said when he finished his walk, he might do some cooking himself. NO, don’t cook yourself!

Benedict: Maybe I'll cut my walk short and do some cooking myself.Eventually, I got to meet Franklin himself. Unlike in previous Animal Crossing games, he’s not the main course this time. He’s a chef hired by Isabelle to cook for everyone else.

Franklin: I'm the guy they call Franklin. Your secretary hired me to come and cook for everyone. But he’s not prepared at all; he has no food to cook! It’s up to me to find all the ingredients he needs.

Franklin: But here's the thing... I'm a bit short on ingredients! His first dish is an oyster salad. He told me I needed vinegar, an oyster, some seaweed, plus a secret ingredient if I wanted to make it spectacular. Of the potential ingredients he will need for his various dishes, some can be caught or found in town–such as fish, fruit, or mushrooms. But others are things you’ll need to get from villagers.

By visiting the indoor animals, you’ll find that they are cooking and they will need certain ingredients (I think it’s always a type of fish) for their own dishes. Catch the fish they need, and they’ll give you a different ingredient in return: Fruit, a mushroom, sugar, vinegar, milk, butter, and so on.

Aurora: You'll trade with me? Thank you very much! Here. I can give you my lemon in return.A surprising ingredient they may give you is a beehive. You’ll use it when a recipe calls for honey.

Tammy: I'm going to let you take this beehive with you! When you make an exchange with them, they’ll also clue you in on what the secret ingredient is for a certain dish.

Along the way, I stopped to shoot down a balloon present.

Shooting down a balloon present.A lot of item shuffling is involved, because you’ll be doing a lot of fishing for certain fish. And I didn’t want to sell the extras, because even if a fish wasn’t needed at this moment, it could be needed next time. So I was going back and forth to my storage quite a bit.

But Tabby eventually gave me the vinegar I needed, and I went diving for the oyster and seaweed. So I took the ingredients to Franklin, and he was able to make the oyster salad. Let’s get cooking!

Franklin: Let's get cooking!Lemon was the secret ingredient, but I didn’t have it in my possession when I took the main three ingredients to Franklin. That was a mistake, because once you give him the three main ingredients, it’s too late. You can’t add the secret ingredient later on, and this ended up costing me. But still, the first dish was complete, and he rewarded me with a harvest clock.

The next dish on the menu was a mushroom bisque. I needed a round mushroom, a flat mushroom, and milk. The mushrooms were easy, since I saved some ahead of time. And Tabby provided me with her milk…

Tabby: Yay! You've made this cat so happy. Here. You can have my milk in return! This time, I made sure I had the secret ingredient (butter from Nintendo Tammy) on hand when I went to see Franklin. He whipped up the mushroom bisque and he said it was outstanding. He rewarded me with this fruit basket.

The fruit basket I got from Franklin during the harvest festival.Next on the menu was the main course. He made sure to point out that people don’t need to eat turkey just because it’s the harvest festival.

Franklin: I don't understand how people can use the Harvest Festival as an excuse to eat turkey, so I need...I gathered the ingredients for the pan-fried red snapper (very tasty) and he cooked it up as well. Yay! My reward this time was a harvest mirror.

Franklin and I celebrate a successful main course. And last but not least, it was time for dessert: Coconut tart. I grabbed a coconut from the beach to go with a lemon, sugar, and honey for the secret ingredient. And with that, we were done! The entire meal was finished!

All four dishes are complete! My final reward was a harvest sofa. Apparently, you can get a cornucopia if you include the secret ingredients for all four dishes. I stupidly missed out on that this time, but I’ll get it next year!

So the fruit basket and cornucopia are really the only two exclusive items you can get from the harvest festival (since the harvest furniture set is sold in the Nooklings’ store anyway). That’s a bit disappointing that there isn’t a new furniture set you can get. It’s a lot of work just for two items.

And most of that work is fishing, by the way. As I tweeted during the day, it almost feels like a fishing tournament more than a harvest festival. The animals all want different types of fish, and it can be time-consuming searching for a certain fish. And even when you catch it, they may give you an ingredient you don’t need, and you have to start the search all over again for a different fish.

However, I do appreciate that Nintendo put in the effort to make the harvest festival a new experience. In City Folk, the harvest festival was almost identical to the one from the GameCube game (except for not having to swipe the forks/knives from the table, which may have been the best part). City Folk even used long stretches of identical text from the GameCube game.

So I am glad they finally tried something new, even if the rewards don’t seem worth the effort. And they did include a nice reference to the old harvest festivals, with Franklin mentioning how he used to be deathly afraid of forks and knives.

Franklin: And to think, not long ago, I was deathly afraid of forks and knives. I'll eat with my fingers, thank you! This festival also made a mess of my town. I was juggling my inventory all over town (that may be a poorly-worded sentence), but I ended up with items all over the place. Here you can see the items I dumped on the ground near the plaza, but there were many others left on river banks all around Forest. Tomorrow will be clean-up day, I suppose.

The mess of items left behind after my harvest festival experience. That’s all for now. I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving (or at least an enjoyable harvest festival for you non-Americans). See you next time!

First Snow

The first snow of the season fell in Forest today!!

The first snow flurries of the season! Not only does it look nice, but it gives me a break from watering flowers. And it signals the end of the dry autumn season. But I’m not the only one in town who was glad to see it; Teddy was also pretty pumped about the snow.

Teddy: I love the snow! It makes me want to run a million miles! While making my rounds, I ran into Rolf. He invited himself over to my house.

Rolf: Wow, you're pretty flexible, huh? Awesome! Let's get going! I'll be right behind you, in my cage! But once we got there, he wasn’t very flattering. He called my house a mess.

Rolf: Other people might call this place a mess, but if it works for you, then what's the problem, right? After he eventually left, Big Top invited me over to his house! What’s with all these house visits lately?

Big Top: I was going to offer you some nice ginger ale, but I drank it all. Hope you're OK with that.I soon made my way up to Main Street. Luna told me that Jeff from Tokyo was my most recent dream visitor. And T&T Emporium had Spring Blossoms for sale. It’s a song I needed for my music player, so I bought it.

Tommy: Ah, Spring Blossoms! A fine item, yes?My (human) friend Skye asked me what my turnip prices were. After I told her Re-Tail was buying them for 134 bells each, she asked me to open my gate so she could sell hers.

After she was done, we made a quick trip out to the island. I needed to catch a butterfly for Teddy, and it was too late to catch one on the mainland. So I caught an emperor, and then we went on an easy balloon-popping tour. We scored 116 points and earned gold Tortimer awards.

Tortimer: And your final score is...116 points! We returned to Forest and I ended the party. Later, I took the butterfly to Teddy. His reward for me was pretty lame (wallpaper), but he made a funny comment about his frostbite getting frostbite. You’d think a big bear like Teddy wouldn’t be so bothered by the first few snowflakes of the season. Winter has a long way to go, buddy.

Teddy: Ohhh! My frostbite is getting frostbite, waddle!
