Chatting with Copper

While playing in my 2nd town of Ohio recently, Chief asked me if I knew how to catch a little giant beetle. That’s an oxymoron, pal! 😛

Chief: Hey! Have you figured out how to catch that annoying little giant beetle?

Another day in Ohio, I found a dig spot and dug up a moving painting!

Check it out! I dug up a moving painting!

I decided to donate it to the museum, and it was the first work of art. Even though I’ve had the town of Ohio for many years, I never really put any effort into things like fish, bugs, and art for the museum. Well, at least it has one painting now!

((Moving painting)) Donated by Scott.

I then did something I rarely do: I spoke to Copper at length. He gave me his whole spiel, and that included some dialogue I didn’t remember. For one thing, he threatened to bite me if I was mischievous!

Copper: You may enter the police station whenever you please... unless you are mischievous, in which case I bite.

He also said that he is “sort of new” to the force, and he’s not familiar with the laws around here. Wait, shouldn’t that be a priority for a police dog??

Copper: I'm ashamed to admit that I'm sort of new to the force. As such, I am not familiar with the laws around here...

He confirmed that there is no punishment for falsely claiming recovered items, which was something I was a bit worried about when I first started playing Animal Crossing. 😀 He then pondered what his role actually was, then. Is he just a doorstop?

Copper: But then...it begs the question, what role does that leave for an officer? Am I just a doorstop?
I’m afraid so, dawg.

It was an interesting conversation, believe it or not.

Copper: It is the duty of an officer to protect and serve the citizenry! Even if the citizenry behaves poorly!

But ultimately, he apologized for talking so much. He compared it to foaming at the mouth, which probably isn’t the best analogy for a dog. Someone might think he has rabies.

Copper: I...I'm so verry sorry! I didn't mean to start foaming at the mouth like that! Forgive me!

Later on, I got quite a surprise when I spoke to Nate. He said it had been 569 weeks since I last spoke to him! Is that even possible?! That’s almost 11 years! Wow! I know I don’t play in Ohio super often and Nate isn’t a guy that I would seek out for a chat, but still, that’s hard to believe! Oops!

Nate: ...It's already been over 569 weeks since we hung out together, hasn't it?

Nate: It doesn't that long if you say 131 months, but 569 weeks sounds really long, don't you think?
Actually they both seem really long.

And when I spoke with Cookie, she informed me that turnips are the root of all evil! Odd statement, but I guess she’s just making a pun.

Cookie: I don't even own any turnips, to tell you the truth. Turnips are the root of all evil!

And just a heads-up that I plan to post at least one Animal Crossing GameCube video in October, and perhaps more… Just subscribe on Youtube to be notified when they’re posted.

Getting Lucky

As you may have seen in the last entry, Nate just moved in two weeks ago…but he’s already gone. I got his goodbye letter in the mail today.

Sorry, Jeff, I'm writing to tell you I left Forest secretly, so don't bother looking for me. See, I... Well, I just had to leave, OK? Let it lie. And if possible...send me fruit! -The Hungry Nate

It didn’t take me long to find his replacement. Next to Maple’s house, I found a new house, and a new villager: Lucky the dog!

Lucky: The name's Lucky. How about you? What's your handle?

He’s pretty cool from what I can see of him (which isn’t much). 😀 I suppose he’s a good animal to have around with Halloween season approaching, since he looks like a mummy.

I was feeling pretty lucky myself, when I dug up the daily glowing spot and got 10,000 bells instead of the usual 1,000.

Baabara told me she had been enjoying the peace and quiet of the mornings, until I came along to ruin them for her. Wow, Baabara being rude? What a surprise.

Baabara: I was so enjoying the peace and quiet of the mornings lately...

Baabara: But now I suppose you've returned to ruin them...

Just a few moments later, I was on the cliff with Ursala. She was looking at a bug down below, and Baabara was also down there looking. Knowing them, they’re probably trying to think up some good insults for the bug.

Ursala and Baabara stare mindlessly at a bug.

And at this time of year, I always try to do some early September Fishing. With no sea bass or jellyfish in the ocean, it’s easy to rack up lots of valuable fish. As long as you avoid the acre with the mouth of the river, the only fish you’ll catch in the ocean are red snappers (3,000 bells each) and barred knifejaws (5,000 bells each). If it’s raining, you may also find some coelacanths (15,000 bells).

Jeff catches a barred knifejaw in Animal Crossing for Nintendo GameCube.

I dropped everything and decided to fill up my pockets twice with fish. On my first run, I caught eight barred knifejaws and seven red snappers. That earned me 61,000 bells.

My pockets full of valuable fish.

My second run netted me the exact same result. So in total, I earned 122,000 bells in about 16 minutes of fishing. Not bad!

If you own the game, this is a good time of year to hook up your GameCube (or Wii) and play for some quick, easy money. Good luck!

New Nate

Even though Filbert just moved in last month, he has already moved out. I got his goodbye letter in the mail today.

To my pal, Jeff, I have a hunger...and while I normally just grab a snack to fill up, this hunger will only be satisfied by exotic foods from far-off lands. So, I'm now a wanderer. Snackily yours, -Filbert

While I don’t go crazy catching summer bugs on GameCube like I do in City Folk, I did catch a few beetles I saw on trees. That included a mountain (stag) beetle, which Sydney bought from me for 2,300 bells.

Sydney: Hey! Is that a mountain beetle?

Update/note: The mountain beetle did not return in later Animal Crossing games. But it got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be cool if each town had a mountain area where you could catch bugs (and maybe fish too) that weren’t in the main town? Or even if it was separate from town, but maybe you could ride Kapp’n’s bus to the mountains.

Anyway, Ursala was not nearly as generous as Sydney. She wanted me to buy some slate flooring or a kitschy wall for 36,160 bells. I was not going for that.

Ursala: Well, care to buy slate flooring or a kitschy wall for 36,160 bells?

Filbert’s replacement has arrived, and it’s Nate the bear. Note: This is not the Nate from my Ohio town. But he said it was nice to meet me, even if I didn’t come bearing snacks. Bearing snacks.

Nate: Your name's Jeff? Uh, nice to meet you, yawwwn. Even if you don't come bearing snacks.

He told me how sweaty he was, since we’re deep into summertime. He said that he feels like seasons pass by while he sleeps. Well, bears do hibernate in winter, so he’s not wrong about that…

Nate: The weather changes so quickly sometimes, I feel like the seasons passed me by while I was asleep...

Down at the dock, I tried to kick a soccer ball onto Kapp’n’s boat. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t work. Surprisingly, the ball will not roll off the sides of the dock…only the end of it. Oh well, it was worth a try. I always enjoy looking for new things to try, no matter how silly or pointless they may be. But you may have noticed that by now. 😛

Speaking of that, I did something else I probably haven’t tried in a very long time. I tried digging in the spots behind the melody board. Those spots are hidden from view, and I actually forgot that you could dig back there. The first spot I dug didn’t have anything in it, but the other one had an exotic lamp! I bet it’s been there for years!

Check it out! I dug up an exotic lamp!

After a stop at Nookington’s to sell some stuff, I returned home and ended my game for the day.

But there has been other Animal Crossing GameCube content I’ve posted since my last entry, so I want to share those with you. I made a new Face Guide that shows how to get the face that you want when you start a new town (or a 2nd/3rd/4th character). Unlike most of the other guides out there, my guide shows actual screenshots of the faces. Note: I’ve also included a link to the guide in the sidebar.

And earlier this month, I also posted my latest Animal Crossing video: GameCube Moments #11. Please check it out if you haven’t seen it already. You may remember some of these scenes from earlier blog entries.
