New Nate

Even though Filbert just moved in last month, he has already moved out. I got his goodbye letter in the mail today.

To my pal, Jeff, I have a hunger...and while I normally just grab a snack to fill up, this hunger will only be satisfied by exotic foods from far-off lands. So, I'm now a wanderer. Snackily yours, -Filbert

While I don’t go crazy catching summer bugs on GameCube like I do in City Folk, I did catch a few beetles I saw on trees. That included a mountain (stag) beetle, which Sydney bought from me for 2,300 bells.

Sydney: Hey! Is that a mountain beetle?

Update/note: The mountain beetle did not return in later Animal Crossing games. But it got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be cool if each town had a mountain area where you could catch bugs (and maybe fish too) that weren’t in the main town? Or even if it was separate from town, but maybe you could ride Kapp’n’s bus to the mountains.

Anyway, Ursala was not nearly as generous as Sydney. She wanted me to buy some slate flooring or a kitschy wall for 36,160 bells. I was not going for that.

Ursala: Well, care to buy slate flooring or a kitschy wall for 36,160 bells?

Filbert’s replacement has arrived, and it’s Nate the bear. Note: This is not the Nate from my Ohio town. But he said it was nice to meet me, even if I didn’t come bearing snacks. Bearing snacks.

Nate: Your name's Jeff? Uh, nice to meet you, yawwwn. Even if you don't come bearing snacks.

He told me how sweaty he was, since we’re deep into summertime. He said that he feels like seasons pass by while he sleeps. Well, bears do hibernate in winter, so he’s not wrong about that…

Nate: The weather changes so quickly sometimes, I feel like the seasons passed me by while I was asleep...

Down at the dock, I tried to kick a soccer ball onto Kapp’n’s boat. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t work. Surprisingly, the ball will not roll off the sides of the dock…only the end of it. Oh well, it was worth a try. I always enjoy looking for new things to try, no matter how silly or pointless they may be. But you may have noticed that by now. 😛

Speaking of that, I did something else I probably haven’t tried in a very long time. I tried digging in the spots behind the melody board. Those spots are hidden from view, and I actually forgot that you could dig back there. The first spot I dug didn’t have anything in it, but the other one had an exotic lamp! I bet it’s been there for years!

Check it out! I dug up an exotic lamp!

After a stop at Nookington’s to sell some stuff, I returned home and ended my game for the day.

But there has been other Animal Crossing GameCube content I’ve posted since my last entry, so I want to share those with you. I made a new Face Guide that shows how to get the face that you want when you start a new town (or a 2nd/3rd/4th character). Unlike most of the other guides out there, my guide shows actual screenshots of the faces. Note: I’ve also included a link to the guide in the sidebar.

And earlier this month, I also posted my latest Animal Crossing video: GameCube Moments #11. Please check it out if you haven’t seen it already. You may remember some of these scenes from earlier blog entries.

Filbert Moves In

Even though Hugh just moved in last month, he’s already gone. I guess he realized that he was making a hugh huge mistake. His goodbye letter arrived in the mail yesterday.

How ARE you, Jeff? Well now, I bet your bottom bell you didn't expect me to cut out and split town, huh? Nope, I shocked the world! I'm turning over a new leaf--see you on the flip side! -Laters, Hugh

I visited Candi, and she told me that she really wanted to use her new umbrella. So she told me to make it rain or snow or something.

Candi: Hey, Jeff! I need you to make it rain or snow or something. And be quick about it, sweetie!
Sure, I’ll get right on that.

Emerald showed me a poem that she got from someone she didn’t know.

To my pupil, Emerald, I take leave of my life. My footsteps carry me like clouds upon wind, drifting in the pale light of the dawning day... I go in search of adventure. -A poet who don't know it!

I found out that Hugh’s replacement was Filbert the squirrel, who just moved into town. I introduced myself to him right after he had a fight with Puck. 😛

Filbert: You say your name is Jeff? I can dig it.

Today, Emerald wanted to trade her diner tile for my dinosaur egg. I agreed to the trade, just to be nice.

Emerald: Oh, that's great! Dinosaur eggs are getting awfully hard to find these days!
You don’t say.

I ran into Ursala, and she gave me a free outfit. That might sound like she was being nice for a change, but then she said the outfit looked much better than the rags I already had on. Excuse me, I’m wearing an exclusive Gracie outfit!

Ursala: I'm sure it will look just lovely on you, Jeff. It's much nicer than the rags you have on, grooomph!

When I met up with Belle, she noticed the cow skull in my pockets. Uh-oh!

Belle: So, I've been thinking... You've got a cow skull, right?

She wasn’t mad, she just wanted it for herself. I didn’t ask why. She offered to give me her G logo for it, and I agreed to the trade.

I shook some trees, and I got stung by a bee. When Kody saw me, he actually got mad at me and said I deserved to get stung! He just assumed that I found something good and refused to share it with him. How rude!

Kody: Fine! Don't share your secret! You deserved to get stung, okey-dokey!

After that, I took my swollen face home and ended my game for the day. See you next time!

Temporary Towns

Lately, I’ve been starting more temporary towns as I work on a couple of projects. So I thought I’d post a bonus blog entry to share some of the things I’ve seen.

Since I’m not saving the towns I’m creating, I’ve just been messing around with different town names. 😛

Rover: You're going to hit me?

Porter: Puke! Now arriving at puke! Welcome to puke! Watch your step, eek EEK!

I’ve been seeing so much of Rover that I think I’ll even see him in my dreams. Or my nightmares, to be more specific.

In the delicious village of Ham Town, I found this cool little island. There’s nothing but a rock on the island, and yet someone bothered to build two bridges to it. They left no stone unturned.

But the river bank at the waterfall there looked so square, so rigid, and so unnatural. I think I could use the river bank edge to cut off a piece of aluminum foil. And yet, I kind of liked it.

I encountered another three-tier map in the town of Big Toe.

I’ve checked out some new islands, and I’ve met some villagers I’ve never seen before…like Yodel here. He had some dialogue that I don’t believe I’ve seen before either. This was in response to me refusing to give him a new catchphrase:

Yodel: I have lagged into self-pity. I have forgotten something essential about what it means to be me!

Yodel: I must spend more time on self-contemplation. For it is there, in the mind's void, that I will find contentment.
Deep stuff. And I thought he was just going to yodel.

But unlike regular villagers, islanders will not always be awake when you start a new town.

Sign on islander's house: I'll see you in my dreams.

By the way, I found out that Kapp’n can get pretty violent… 😛

Kapp'n: With me turtle-tough shell, I'll ring yer wee bell, black yer eye, make ye cry, and say farewell.

And with that, I’ll say farewell…for now. I’ll post another entry one day soon with an update on what’s going on in Forest. I hope you’ve enjoyed these screenshots.
