Trading Items

Mitzi the cat has wandered away from Forest; I got her goodbye letter in the mail today.

Mitzi's goodbye letter.I had been asked by Savannah on Youtube (another Animal Crossing player–not the zebra) to send her a green bed. So I went up to Nookington’s to do that today. Nook generated the password for her, and I sent it to her in a Youtube message. It’s interesting when you think that City Folk and Wild World will soon be losing their ability to trade items with players over the internet, yet trading in the GameCube game can continue indefinitely. Animal Crossing was ahead of its time.

Getting a password to send an item.I found Gulliver down on the beach, and he told me another tall tale of how he ended up in the ocean. He then gave me a shogi piece as a reward for “saving” him.

Gulliver: ...when a wave snatched me off the deck!I talked to Sydney today, and apparently that’s the first time I’ve spoken with her in two months. She was looking very mopey and depressed.

Sydney: I've been searching for you for weeks. She cheered up briefly when she went into her sales pitch mode, though. She tried to talk me into buying some wood paneling for 3,000 bells. However, her frown quickly returned when I declined the offer.

I circled around town and I soon bumped into my new neighbor, Carrie the kangaroo (and her child). They seem nice, but I’m afraid they won’t stick around long. I bet they’ll be hopping away in a matter of weeks.

Meeting Carrie. After stopping at the post office and pulling the last few weeds I saw, I returned home and ended my game.

Petunia Out, Freya In

When I started up the game today, Tortimer was waiting for me outside my door. He scolded me for not turning on the lighthouse every day. I got news for you, old man: It’s not my job!

Tortimer: You completely slacked off!Of course the snow has melted since my last update, so that’s nice to see. I checked my mail and found a goodbye letter from Petunia.

Petunia's goodbye letter.I also got a bunch of fossils back in the mail. But I couldn’t sell them, because today was Nook’s raffle day. And I didn’t have any raffle tickets, so I couldn’t do that either!

Tom Nook: I can't let you do this without raffle tickets.I ran into Hank, and I accidentally asked him for a job. He told me that he needed his videotape back from Tom. What exactly could be on that videotape? A version of the chicken dance that nobody wants to see? I was afraid to find out!

Hank: Go to Tom's pad and get my videotape back!So I tracked down Tom and asked him for the videotape. Fortunately, he didn’t send me on a wild goose chase to ask 57 other villagers for it. Fortunately, he had it right in his pants.

Tom: Here it is!I returned it to Hank and he rewarded me with a gray tartan. After that, I checked my map and found the new neighbor’s house. I went to introduce myself to Freya the wolf.

Freya: My name is Freya! Don't you wish it was your name? While going up the ramp, I saw Kody and spoke with him. It was kind of awkward, because I was still on the ramp and he was looking down at me.

Kody: You can't find Saharah's carpets at the Nookmeister's shop.I then stopped at the post office and checked out the dump. There were some items in there I normally would have taken (some furniture and paper), but my pockets were full. I blame the Nook man.

Valentine’s Day

Today is Valentine’s Day, and my female villagers sent me valentines in the mail. They also attached gifts to the letters. Here’s a list of what they all sent me:

  • Petunia: big dot shirt
  • Maple: yellow bolero
  • Sydney: flicker shirt
  • Candi: slot machine
  • Emerald: wet roadway sign
  • Ursala: kiddie dresser
  • Belle: bear pole

Yeah, what says “I love you” better than a slot machine or a wet roadway sign?

But my valentine from Belle was particularly creepy. It wasn’t just the words she used, but also the stationery she chose.

Belle's Valentine for me, sent on spooky paper. "Stay by my side forever!"After selling all my gifts (yes, how awful of me), I began my walk around town. Puck was telling me he’s been really hungry lately. He didn’t know if it was because of the cold temperatures or if he’s in love…

Puck: Maybe I'm in love!I found Candi inside an igloo, but she didn’t appreciate me being in there with her. How rude.

Candi: Seriously, take off and get some fresh air.Over by the wishing well, I saw Tortimer. At first, I thought it was because of Valentine’s Day. But he’s just going on vacation and he wants me to turn on the lighthouse for him while he’s gone. I’m not going to do it, at least not every day, so I’m sure he’ll be furious at me when he returns.

Tortimer: I'm going on vacation to this tropical island tomorrow.Near the top of my ramp, I met my new neighbor Mitzi. She accused me of giving her a heart attack just by saying hello. Whatever, you drama queen.

Mitzi: It's rude to startle a lady before you've met her.I then finished up my day by mailing some fossils away to be identified. I also pulled some weeds on the way back home.

Just one last note about the GameCube version of Animal Crossing. One advantage that often gets overlooked is that if you want to have two towns in this Animal Crossing game, all you need is two memory cards. To have two towns in New Leaf, you would need to buy a second copy of the game!
