Bug Hunting Season 2022

I quickly noticed a heavy meteor shower as I started up the game tonight. Unfortunately, there’s no way to wish on those shooting stars, but it is a nice sight to behold. 🌠

In the shop, I was actually a bit impressed with how the tiki torches look in this game. That top circle looks wider than the one in New Horizons, and I like it. Okay, maybe I’m just weird. 😛

Tom Nook: Yes, a tiki torch. It costs 696 bells.

I got to see the inside of Boomer’s house, and he apparently thinks he’s living on a small island by himself. He has a bunch of totem poles, a campfire, a sleeping bag, and…a cannon?

The inside of Boomer's house in Animal Crossing: City Folk.

If he thinks he’s firing at pirates, he’s actually going to be blowing a hole through his wall.

Once I was done talking to everyone and identifying fossils, etc., I got down to the serious business of bug catching. 😉 That time of year is here, and I’m ready for it!

The first valuable bug I saw was a tarantula. But the stupid little guy was about to walk right into the river and kill himself! So I had to hurry up my swing…and you can probably guess how this ended. Because I rushed my swing, my aim was off. And he jumped at the chance (literally) to attack me. The only consolation is that after he killed me, he also walked into the river anyway.

For the first 5-10 minutes of my hunt, I was only finding mid-range bugs (other than the tarantula I missed). My first good catch was this rainbow stag.

I caught a rainbow stag! Someone tell me, already! Where's the rainbow?!

That seemed to kick things off, with better bugs popping up regularly after that.

My bug hunts generally don’t involve much fishing, unless I see a shark fin or an eel. (Eels are only worth 2k, but they’re a sure thing because no other fish have the same shadow.) But of course, I also stop to fish when I see a huge fish shadow. This one in the river turned out to be an arapaima!

Catching an arapaima in ACCF.

My 50-minute hunt had a lot of variety. I caught three rainbow stags in total, thee goliath beetles, three scarab beetles, a golden stag, an atlas beetle, a cyclommatus, a tarantula, a scorpion, a hammerhead shark, a regular shark, a blue marlin, that arapaima, an elephant beetle, and of course, a bunch of mid-range catches.

My grand total for my 50-minute hunt was 213,057 bells.

213,057 bells

That did include a couple items villagers gave me, and a balloon present, so that’s why it’s an odd number. But that’s not bad for under an hour’s work! There will be many more bug hunts throughout the summer. Good luck to you if you’ll be doing the same this summer! 🐛🐞🦋

See you again soon!

  1. So far this month I failed a tarantula, a few Goliath beetles, a Cyclommatus, as well as an Agrias butterfly and a banded dragonfly that disappeared before I could catch them. I have not been trying to catch bugs and fish to make money this month so that is why I have not been catching anything. I might later this month.

  2. I thought Scarab Beetles were only worth 6,000 Bells in this game. In New Horizons, they are worth 10,000 bells. Therefore, Goldie’s buying price would have been good no matter who it was. Personally, I NEVER sell ANYTHING to my villagers unless I am positive that they are offering more than Nook.

I started playing City Folk in Late November of 2021, and got the hang of it by Mid-December of 2021. I play in a town started by my older sister, named Peep. I play every day, and unintentionally got a Perfect Town a few weeks back. I say “unintentionally” because I only planted the flowers bought from Nook every day, like I always do. I realized my town status when a Jacob’s Ladder appeared near Gloria’s house.

I do not have the Golden Net or fishing rod yet, which is because the last few bugs that I need aren’t available yet. Though I do donate everything that I catch the first time (excluding the Migratory Locust when I first started playing).

I could use a few tips on Scorpion catching, which is because the vile wretch continues to evade my silver net. I’ve had a few close calls with the Scorpion, though, sadly, these all resulted in a victory for the bug.
The first Scorpion that I ever saw was in the field of flowers next to my house. Because my house is on the beach, I caught a beetle BEFORE the Scorpion Attack.
Once, I exited Town Hall, walked over a bridge looking for a Scorpion, and didn’t notice the one on the other end of the bridge. I stepped on it, angering the wretch. I was attacked.
Last night, I was looking for a Scorpion, and, unfortunately, ended up walking right into the Scorpion.

I must ask, is it possible for villagers that have previously lived in your town to return to your town?

    1. Oh, sorry. I was thinking it was 10k; I must’ve been thinking of the rainbow stag.

      Congrats on the perfect town!

For scorpions, make sure you don’t run around while holding your net. Keep the net in your pockets until you see the scorpion, then back up a safe distance before taking the net out. Then walk very slowly towards it.

Yes, villagers can return, but it’ll usually be many years later. Elmer, Avery, and Miranda (and probably some others too) have lived in my town multiple times.

      1. Thanks for the Scorpion tips!

I caught my first one at around 3:30 AM on the morning of July 25th! It was crawling next to the Able Sisters.

Interestingly enough, Elmer just left my town about a month ago. Because I play every day, I prevent all of my villagers from moving out. However, I forgot Elmer wanted to leave and accidentally let him do so.

Speaking of Villagers, in my opinion, I have a pretty good lineup of villagers in my town. However, I am wondering if I should just keep my villagers and wait until I get another Animal Crossing game to get new villagers, or move some out.
In my town, I have the following villagers: Lily, Coco, Rosie, Gloria, Bree, Lobo, Rocco, Poncho, Moe, and Chester.
I play with three other family members, and my siblings are also attached to some villagers. What do you think on the subject?

Additionally, the Rainbow Stag is worth 10k and the Scarab Beetle worth 6k in this game, though this is reversed in New Horizons.

Lastly, I wanted to ask you if there are any bugs or fish that you think are underpriced or overpriced due to their rarity or difficulty to catch. If so, how much do you think they should be worth?

As you always say, “Never Stop Crossing!”

        1. Awesome, congrats on the scorpion! As for the villagers, I like Lily, Rosie, and Coco a lot. I’m neutral towards most of the others you listed.

I think the emperor butterflies are a bit underpriced. I think they’re only worth 2500 bells, but they can be tricky to catch sometimes…especially when they keep flying back and forth across a river! I wish they were more like 4,000 or so.

          1. Thanks.
For that manner, Agrias Butterflies are even faster than Emperor Butterflies, so if the Emperor was worth 4000, the Agrias should be worth around 5300.
Additionally, I think the Birdwing Butterflies are far too rare to only be worth 4000 Bells. They should be worth more like 8000.
Banded Dragonflies are very fast. Sometimes, I see one, but it flies away, and I end up running around the lower tier of my town for a good 10 minutes before finding one. They could be worth 9000 Bells.
I do feel like Scorpions and Tarantulas should be worth more like 11,000 Bells as opposed to 8,000.
The Orchid Mantis, on top of being rare, camouflages on white flowers, so it should probably be worth more like 4800 Bells.
There are quite a few fish that are underpriced in my opinion. This is because of their rarity.
            Koi: 6400 Bells
            Killifish: 700 Bells
            Freshwater Goby: 1500 Bells
            Pike: 5800 Bells
            Guppy: 2300 Bells
            Pirhana: 4500 Bells
            Surgeonfish: 5000 Bells
            Barred Knifejaw: 7000 Bells
Lobster / Moray Eel: 5300 Bells
            Tuna: 10,000 Bells
            Ocean Sunfish: 6000 Bells
            Eel: 4000 Bells
            Bluegill: 420 Bells
Lastly, I believe the Coelacanth, while one of the most expensive fish in the game, I believe is still underpriced. It should be worth around 30,000 Bells.

On a final note, I would like to ask the comparison between how often you scare away bugs, such as the summer beetles, and how often you scare them away. Additionally, what is the comparison between how often you get attacked by Scorpions and Tarantulas, to how often you catch them? Same question relating to Bees.

And, maybe you should do another Q & A video soon. Maybe including a voice or even an age reveal?

            Never Stop Crossing!

            1. As for the valuable tree beetles, I tend to do well with them. I’d estimate I probably catch them around 90% of the time, unless they’re in a tricky spot like my peninsula. Lesser bugs would be lower percentage, because I don’t take as much care with them, some scare easily (like the oak silk moth and lantern fly), and others I scare away on purpose (especially fruit beetles).

My tarantula and scorpion success rate is certainly lower. I’d estimate I catch maybe 60% of them? But of course, it depends on who sees who first. If they spot me first when I have my net out, I’m toast.

Bees are probably well under 50% in this game. But I generally don’t shake trees much in this game, so that’s not too much of a problem.

  3. Thanks for the information!

I agree. I usually purposely scare away bugs such as cicadas and fruit beetles, though I usually catch Diving and Dung Beetles.
Lantern Flies and Oak Silk Moths are ridiculously skittish, which is why I usually won’t catch them unless Nook is still open, and even then I can scare them away occasionally. They should be worth more too, something like 4200 for the Lantern Fly and 3800 for the Oak Slik Moth.
I think that I might be better at catching Bees than you because I use the strategy of shaking the tree, running north, equipping the net, and swinging when the bees get close. The only exception would be if the Bee falls out of a tree that is near a cliff.
Once, a few days ago, I was hunting bugs by the beach, and I caught a Goliath Beetle. I continued walking, please note that my net was out when I spotted a Tarantula on the beach. Thankfully, I don’t think he saw me because of a palm tree in the way, so I managed to catch him.
The speed of aggressive scorpions and Tarantulas is set so that you can continuously run away from the bug, though you will never get far enough ahead to catch it. Usually, I will run away until I either find a villager to talk to, or screw up a turn.
However, theoretically, based on the one City Folk moment, where you survive a Scorpion attack by catching a Horned Dynastid, you could run away from the aggressive bug until you find a bug, most likely a moth. This, however, I’ve never been able to do.

Because Saharah was in my town the other day, I’m wondering what the highest amount of old carpets or wallpapers you’ve received from villagers in a single day is. Mine is 4.
Have you received the Lunar Surface yet? I got that the other day.

As of the time I am writing this comment, the amount of bells that I have is 16,550,510. And I have only been playing since November.

I recently caught a Giant Petaltail, though it wasn’t my last bug. The only bugs that I still need are the Red Dragonfly and the Bell Cricket. As for fish, I still need Jellyfish, Salmon, and King Salmon.

    Until next time!

    1. I agree that the lantern fly and oak silk moth should be worth more. They’re tricky to catch!

I think my record is five old wallpapers from villagers, which I did way back in 2013. But I still have not received the lunar surface.

Congrats, that’s a lot of bells for less than a year of playing! Do you have your house and town funds fully paid off too?

Good luck with your remaining fish and bugs!

      1. Sorry haven’t replied sooner.
I have my house fully paid off and all but the last loan of my 2nd house. My other 2 houses are on the 8×8 main room. As for town fund,I have gotten the bridge and fountain, but I cannot decide whether to get the lighthouse with rare fish, or the windmill with rare bugs. Any advice?
I haven’t been playing City Folk as much lately due to me starting my New Horizons Island, where I must unfortunately live with Pietro and Gigi. However, I intend to get my last four creatures sometime today or tomorrow.
As of right now, my last summer bug hunt brought me to over 21 million bells. I don’t hack, but I do time travel. However, if I time travel, I only ever skip one day at a time, so that I may play every day.
        Until Next Time!

        1. As far as I know, the supposed effects of the windmill/lighthouse are just unproven rumors. Just pick whichever you think will look better in your town.

Congrats on your successful summer bug hunt! And I hope you managed to get those last four creatures you needed! 🙂
