Animal Crossing Q&A

On this page, I’ll be answering some Animal Crossing questions, mainly about New Horizons (ACNH), but some may apply to the series in general. These aren’t necessarily questions I’ve received personally, but things I’ve seen asked and discussed around on the internet. While I’m launching this page with just a few questions, I plan on adding to it over time. I’m hoping this will become a helpful resource as it grows. Let’s get started!

How to Get Bamboo in Animal Crossing?

By using a Nook Miles Ticket, you can visit mystery islands. A small percentage of those will be bamboo islands where you can dig up bamboo shoots (which can be taken back to your island and planted). If you eat some food first, you can also dig up the full-sized bamboo trees on the mystery island.

Also, when you buy turnips from Daisy Mae, she may send you bamboo shoots in the mail the next day. You can use them in cooking recipes or plant them to grow bamboo on your island.

When Can You Buy Turnips in Animal Crossing?

You can buy turnips from Daisy Mae on Sunday mornings, anytime from 5 a.m. until noon. She may be anywhere on your island, so it may take a bit of searching to find her. Good luck with your turnips!

Can You Plant Turnips in Animal Crossing?

No, turnips can not be planted and grown. They exist as a commodity which trades on the stalk market, with prices that change twice a day. (Nook’s Cranny will have a morning price and an afternoon price Monday through Saturday.) You must sell the turnips, eat them, or cook them before Sunday morning or they will rot.

Is Rover in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Even though Rover doesn’t play the same role that he did in earlier games, he is still in New Horizons too. He appears as part of the May Day mazes each year in early May. You’ll find him at the end of the maze, and he’ll give you a reward for completing the challenge.

Catchphrase Ideas?

I often try to give my villagers species-specific catchphrases, like “in ink” for an octopus, “in the sky” for a bird, “up my nose” for an anteater or elephant, “up a tree” for a squirrel, “at KFC” for a chicken, “in a pond” for a frog or duck, “on a bun” for a bull or cow, “on ice” for a penguin, and so on. The downside? They will sometimes share the phrase with villagers of a different species, so it may not always fit.

Other times, I’ll use more general phrases that will sometimes result in some funny sentences. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • unlike you
  • you fool
  • in a tutu
  • on my bum
  • if I poop
  • if I die
  • I peed
  • I ate it
  • I hate it
  • for lunch
  • or else
Pashmina: Arghh! I crossed my legs, and they fell asleep! I peed!

If it’s a villager you strongly dislike, you can also make insulting phrases such as “I’m evil” or “do I smell?”

How to Get Log Stakes in Animal Crossing?

When making a bridge construction kit early in the game, you may notice that four log stakes are required. But where do you get the log stakes themselves? The answer is that they too can be crafted! You’ll just need three pieces of wood (regular wood) for each one.

The DIY recipe for log stakes.

If you don’t have enough wood, you’ll have to use an axe to smack some trees. But be careful, because trees will be chopped down after three hits if you’re using a regular axe. So it’s best to hit them twice, and then move on to the next tree. Good luck!
