Mushroom Season!

Now that Animal Crossing (and my town, Forest) are 20 years old, I decided to finally do something that I have never done in the game: Go mushrooming! Even though mushrooms are easy to find in later games, they have very limited availability on GameCube.

~Attention Mycologists!~ At long last, mushrooming season is upon us! Yes, in just four or five more days, don your 'shrooming shoes and hunt those mushrooms!

In fact, you can only find them for one hour (starting at 8 a.m.) for about ten days in October (from the 15th through the 25th). What makes it even more challenging is that one of the five mushrooms will disappear each 15 minutes. So I started right at 8:00 on this rainy autumn Sunday morning, and I found my first mushroom near the lake at 8:01.

Finding my first mushroom ever.

I later found one near the bottom of my eastern ramp, one near the museum, and one near the police station. I never found the 5th one, but that’s okay. I was satisfied just to finally participate for the first time. 🙂

My four mushrooms in my pockets.

I spotted Joan in town, which is a very rare occurrence for me (since I almost never play this game in the morning). I didn’t buy any turnips from her, but I did stop to say hello.

Joan: It's Sunday morning! I've been selling my turnips for, oh, 'bout 60 years. Sow Joan, the name you can trust!

Later on (when the shop opened), I sold my four mushrooms to Tom Nook for a total of 20,000 bells. That’s 5k each, which is actually quite good. This isn’t a bad way to make some extra money if you’re more of a morning person than I am. 😉

Forest Life… Goes On

Of course, mushrooms aren’t the only thing going on in Forest. Life goes on. When I played earlier this month (on October 5th), I received a goodbye letter from Mint in the mail. Her replacement was Alli the gator.

Alli: Hm. As I expected. I am Alli. It's a pleasure to meet you, graaagh!

Alli previously lived in Forest ten years ago. But the most interesting part is that she moved into the same spot where she lived in 2012, with the river right behind her house!

Today, I learned that Dotty has also moved out. Her replacement was Nibbles the squirrel. Nibbles previously lived in Forest back in 2011…but not in the same spot.

Nibbles: Oh, I see! You're another one of my fans, aren't you, niblet? It's a CHORE being so darn popular!

Tonight, Belle stopped to gloat that she goes mushrooming every year, while suggesting that I never have. She would have been right about that before today, but not any more!

Belle: I go mushrooming every year, of course, but I bet you've never been, have you?

Meanwhile, Ursala tried to sell me a cherry for 2,370 bells. I had no need for it…especially at that ridiculous price.

Ursala: Why are you sniffing? Sampling my lovely perfume? Or do you perhaps smell my fruit, grooomph?

She insisted that I’ll never find another cherry around here, which is completely false. I have plenty of cherry trees around. 😛

Ursala: You'll never find a single cherry around here. I'm going to enjoy eating every delicious one I have!

Here is my video of the mushrooming:

Kicked Into Next Week

Yesterday, I received a letter in the mail from Cashmere. The rude sheep has cashed out and fled town.

My little Jeff, I can't stand for anyone to see me cry... You must know, that's the only reason I left without saying goodbye. Even now, the tears are... I can't bear it! Farewell! Yours, Cashmere
Baa-bye!

Her replacement was Mint the green squirrel. Even though Mint is also a snooty villager, she’s a big improvement over Cashmere. Welcome to town, Mint!

Mint: I hope to see you around, ahhhhhh!

Mint previously lived in my town back in 2011.

Tom gave me a free cherry, and Kody gave me a free pear. Getting two foreign fruits from villagers on the same day, especially for free, is a very rare thing in this game!

Kody: So I'm gonna throw you this pear for free, Jeff! Lucky you!

Since it’s the first half of September, I went to do some fishing in the ocean.

Catching a barred knifejaw in Animal Crossing.

Unfortunately, the sea bass have started to return by now…but I still caught more good fish (red snappers and barred knifejaws) than sea bass. I filled up my pockets with fish, throwing back any sea bass I caught. I ended up with 11 red snappers and four barred knifejaws, which was good for 53,000 bells. That was more than enough to bump my savings up to 21 million bells.

Phyllis: Your balance is 21,000,000 bells.

Today, I asked a few villagers for jobs. Genji asked me for a bug, and I caught him a pill bug. He rewarded me with a groovy wall. Ursala asked me to make a delivery to Dotty, and she gave me a slot machine. And then Belle asked me for a ball…

Belle: Kicking the stuffing out of a ball? Hey, yeah! That's a great way to relieve stress, cuddles!
She’s the Belle of the ball.

So I found a volleyball and kicked it back to Belle. She rewarded me with a shrine lantern before joking about kicking me into next week. 😛

Belle: I'll be sure to think of you when I'm kicking this ball into next week!
Are you trying to start some beef with me?

Emerald had some kitchen flooring she didn’t need, and she wanted to trade it for the groovy wall that I got from Genji. I didn’t prefer one over the other, so I agreed to the trade.

Emerald: Oh, that's great! Groovy walls are getting awfully hard to find these days!
How groovy.

See you all next time!

Bad Mood Day?

Sadly, I received a goodbye letter from Portia in the mail today. Doggone it!

My dearest Jeff, I'm sure you've become an emotional wreck looking for me, but I'm gone now! I'm sorry I left without a word. It isn't like I don't like you. It was just time to move on. Fare thee well! -Portia

Tom was all stressed out because of the morning aerobics that are still underway (but only through tomorrow).

Tom: I tell you! Getting up early in the morning and doing aerobics first thing really tires an animal out!

When I visited Baabara, she wanted me to buy a mystery item for 3,000 bells. I declined, and of course that made her angry. 😛 She told me the item was a neutral corner, and she assumed I regretted my decision. She’ll never learn.

Baabara: It's...a neutral corner! Regreat your rash decision? Well, you'll get no sympathy form me! It's too late now!
I should stick you in the corner.

But she wasn’t the rudest villager of the day. That title belonged to Ursula, who wondered how a “steakhead” like me got ahold of a flat stag beetle.

Ursala: Heyyyy...Jeff. How did a steakhead like you get a flat stag beetle like that? Seriously, how?
I caught it. With my net. How else?

She called it an injustice that a woefully uncultured person such as myself could have one…so she said I should give it to her.

Ursala: I think we both can agree you clearly don't deserve it. So, why don't you give ME the flat stag beetle?
Over your dead body.

Of course, I refused, and then she acted as if she never really wanted it to begin with. Sour grapes, much?

Rudeness was the theme of the day as I met my new villager, Cashmere. Before she would even introduce herself, she yelled at me to stop shouting. But I was not shouting.

Cashmere: Stop shouting! I'm right here! I can hear you fine, baaaby!

The whole time, her two gyroids were buzzing or screaming, whatever it was, really loudly and obnoxiously! Cashmere should be yelling at her own gyroids, not me! They’re as annoying as her!

Cashmere's annoying gyroids.

When I checked my previous entries to see if Cashmere lived here before, I found that she moved in ten years ago. But the most interesting part is that in 2012, she replaced Portia! Just like she did today! I’ve seen coincidences like this before too, so I’m starting to think there’s some sort of pattern to it all.

I posted a new video today, comparing many aspects of the five main (core) Animal Crossing games. It updates and combines the comparisons I used in previous videos, with some new ones as well. Check it out!
